About News Feeds      Share

What?

Why?

Who?

How?

When?

An RSS news feed is a simple way to communicate your message to your "audience", large or small. If you are in business, your audience is your customer base plus potential customers. For community service groups, homeowners organizations, clubs, fraternities and sororities, and the like, your audience is the membership.

Let your imagination roam ... if you have a need to communicate to a group, or derive a benefit from so doing, you should explore RSS feeds as an effective way to accomplish your communication goals without the mess and 'spamminess' of broadcasting email. Simply post your message to your news feed using Enfeedia, and presto, your audience is alerted about the arrival of a new message.

How is your audience made aware of new items being posted? This feature is what makes news feeds so valuable. RSS news "readers" are available that detect new entries in a feed and then report those events in a way that is specific to that reader. For example, using the news reader capability of Yahoo, a person can view all new items in a feed by subscribing to the feed using their MyYahoo account ... and additionally request that an email alert be sent to him/her when new items are posted. Because the email address is registered with Yahoo, not the publisher of the news feed, the email address remains private. And the publisher of the news feed need not maintain an email address book for his audience. Moreover, this means that the audience can grow (by word of mouth, for example) without involving any work on the part of the news feed publsher.

Current versions of browsers include news reader capabilities. Firefox includes a "Live Bookmark" feature that prsents the latest news items for feeds that you subscribe to. Apple's Safari indicates new items having been posted onto a feed that you bookmark with a number in parentheses, indicating how many items you have not yet read, next to the bookmark name.

"Mail" in Apple's Leopard operating system now supports RSS news feeds right along side of email, making it as convenient to subscribe to news feeds as reading your email. Mail programs for the PC are sure to follow or risk being seen as non-responsive to users' needs and becoming non-competitive.

Why publish a news feed?

1. To effectively communicate your message without the mess and spamminess of email.

If you operate a business, no matter how small or large, you will find your customers and prospects appreciate your messages without being slammed by email. By writing thoughtful messages, you can attract new customers and establish loyalty with existing customers.

If you have responsibility within an organization, you will find that RSS news feeds can be an effective way to fulfill your obligations to keep members informed, whether it be meeting notices, minutes of previous meetings, new regulations, events, and so on.

2. To improve your website's Search Engine Results Placement.

Improve your site's Search Engine Results Placement using RSS News Feeds in three ways.

First, search engines know from which search term a site was reached, and for how long a site visitor stayed on that page once there. It's widely believed that with this knowledge, search engines will improve the SERP for a search term the longer one views the site using that search term. By including well-written news feeds on your site, you can retain the visitor's attention and keep them around for awhile longer, thereby improving your SERP.

Second, when you include news feeds on your site and add a news item from time to time, you keep your website "fresh". Search engines reward sites with fresh content, compared to relatively static sites, with higher SERP. Yes, you could just change your website HTML code from time to time, but hohw much easier it is using a news feed for this purpose: no coding, no file uploading, no web designer fees.

Finally, the content of your news items is "crawled" be search engines. If you write news with thoughtfully selected keywords organically intertwined with your text, your web page will be seen increasingly more relevant to search terms appearing in your news items as well as across your site, again improving your SERP.

It's simple to publish your news feed using Enfeedia.

1. Open an account.

First, sign up for a free account. Although there are more highly featured accounts available, experiment with the free account. You will likely find it serves all your needs.

2. Start a feed.

After getting your account, start a news feed by filling in a form describing your news feed.

3. Post an item.

Then, enter your first news item, again filling out a simple form. Your news item is simply a title, a body or description, and a link to offer the the reader of your news item more information.

Enfeedia takes care of the rest. It's that simple. From start to finish, you can be publishing your first news feed in a few minutes.

How do you promote your news feed?

There are a number of ways to communicate to others the existence of your news feed and to offer ways for them to subscribe to your feed. Enfeedia offers all of these:

1. Your RSS News Feed address is simply the URL for your feed, just like URLs for websites. This is the address used to subscribe to the feed in various "news readers" aka aggregators, and also used to read feeds in RSS-capable browsers.

2. Your RSS News Feed button is a graphic icon you place on your website, and when clicked, opens your feed in their browser.

3. Your NewsPage address is the URL for your personal mini-webpage NewsPage dedicated to you that presents your news feed.

4. Your NewsPage button is a graphic icon you place on your website, and when clicked, opens your NewsPage in their browser.

5. Display your news items directly on your website using a 'code snippet' the Enfeedia provides to you.

For all of these, see Stylize & Promote Feeds.

How often should you post a news item to your feed?

Consider the two consumers of your feeds:

1. People

Consider the objective and your audience. They will subscribe to your feed if they find it interesting and timely. If you 'over-publish' without having captivating material that warrants the issuance of a news item, you could lose their interest and they will tune out. If you publish too infrequently, they may forget you or not trust the news feed for providing needed and timely information.

2. Search Engine Crawlers

If you have a website, you may be able to display your news item directly on site. If so, fresh material posted onto your news feed can improve your site's position in search results findings because websites with fresh material, as opposed to static sites, tend to be favored by search engines. In this case, adding a news item several times a month can pay dividends.
