Lost Sierra Weekend

FeedBack ( 0) | This is an update on longboard activities happening in the "Lost Sierra"! For starters, we had great races in January but alas, too much new snow (5-7 feet) created daunting challenges & we unfortunately had to cancel the February revival races. But not to fear, our races in March are shaping up to be a particularly special event! Here in Plumas County, your friends at the Plumas Ski Club are preparing a celebration. As I depart for some non- longboard time wandering in the desert (until 3-12), I wanted to get off a quick note expressing our excitement to "right honorably" sponsor this Lost Sierra gathering. The weekend of March 18-20, we are commemorating the 150 anniversary of ski racing and ski clubs in America and the 60th Anniversary of the Plumas Ski Club.

Attached a "right honorable and 'offishial' " invitation to the event (some minor details may change). We hope you (and/ or others from your "right honorable" ski organizations) will be able to attend. This is what we are working on.

Starting Friday evening the 18th, Doug Robinson is doing a slide presentation in Quincy sponsored by Feather River College. Doug says he's racing on Sunday we here!

On Sat.the19th (and in the spirit of the museum reception at Mammoth 2009 ISHA), we are working with our friends at Plumas Eureka State Park to hold a special reception at the Johnsville Museum. We hope to have a wonderful crowd of longboarders, right honorable dignitaries, and friends of the Plumas Ski Club. We are hoping to share a new longboard ski history presentation being prepared by the club. Earlier in the day, we are also hosting a "ski history telemark and snowshoe tour" on Eureka Peak, weather permitting.

And then of course, on Sunday the 20th, the Eureka Bowl Track will be the site for the 2011 World Championship Longboard Revival Races. Including the 1952 races at the Snowshoe Flats Track along with 19 years of our current race series, this will be the 20th year the Plumas Ski Club has sponsored longboard revival races... another "right honorably" fun milestone. We hope to have our biggest ever photo shoot of authentic longboards and expect spirited racing with "no spittin' or cheatin' " and please, authentic dope wax only ! It promises to be a good time.
We will be sending along further information and our web site at plumasskiclub.org will be updated with event information.

We would be "right honored" if you can attend!

Cheers,
Skiers on 11 to 13-foot longboard skis attempt to race down the oldest recorded ski racing slopes in the nation at Eureka Bowl located within Plumas-Eureka State Park.

Decked out in historic costumes, the racers use a single wooden pole between their legs to stop, creating a snowy rooster --tail. Homemade ski wax (also known as "dope") placed on the wooden longboard skis provides an authentic touch and is required for speed. The races are open to both participants and spectators, and include food, drink, music, and prizes. Racers pay a small fee for use of longboard skis, but races are free to spectators.
Nakoma Golf Resort to reopen with new owners

FeedBack ( 0) | The Nakoma Golf Resort at Gold Mountain has emerged from nearly five years in bankruptcy. Judge Zive of the Federal Bankruptcy court ruled in favor of accepting an offer from the Schomac Group, Inc., purchasing all of the resort assets. A sigh of relief could be heard in the courtroom, as the transfer of ownership could be finalized quickly with no further conditions to the sale. The actual close of escrow was on April 23, 2010. Nakoma Golf resort is in Plumas County, on A-15, four miles southwest of Portola, and six miles East of Graeagle.

Schomac plans on beginning work immediately to make improvements to the Nakoma golf course, clubhouse and Spa Villas. They attribute the survival of the golf course to the maintenance and care that the creditors and homeowners of Gold Mountain have shown during the bankruptcy and look forward to supporting them as the new owners of the property.

The focal point of the Robin Nelson designed 18-hole championship golf course is the 23,000 square foot clubhouse named "Nakoma" , a Chippewa Indian word meaning, "I do as I promise" . In 1924, Frank Lloyd Wright had originally designed the clubhouse for the Nakoma Golf Club located in one of the first planned suburbs of the United States, near Madison Wisconsin.

The challenging golf course at Gold Mountain was aptly named the "Dragon" , but during the bankruptcy some changes were made to the course and the fierce sounding "Dragon" name was changed to Nakoma Golf Resort.

David Beveridge, Vice President of the Schomac Group, said, "My charge will be to bring Gold Mountain and the Nakoma Golf Resort back to where it can once again shine as a beacon in Plumas County." Roy Tremoureux, the new General Manager, echoed his comments saying,"It will be a great day in the sun when homeowners, tourists and the residents of the area can enjoy a new and milder course."

Mr. Beveridge and Mr. Tremoureux expect that re-opening may be as early as this year, perhaps June 1, 2010 for the golf course. They will be offering some special rates to bring the golfers back. The clubhouse will be offering a snack bar in the beginning, but eventually Nakoma will have a more complete menu. The bar will re-open with the golf course, and lodging will be available soon at the "Spa Villas."

The Schomac Group is not new to the Plumas County area. They own and have been redeveloping the historic Feather River Inn, located in Graeagle, less than 10 miles from Nakoma Golf Resort. Restoration of the Feather River Inn has been interrupted due to legal challenges by the High Sierra Rural Alliance. In June of last year, the HSRA filed suit against Plumas County for the Board of Supervisor unanimous approval of the Inn Environmental Impact Report and Master Development Plan. Once resolved, the two sister resorts should work together in great harmony, providing a superb mix of lodging, convention facilities, and recreational amenities, not to mention, significant employment to the area.
