SME/Olathe Game: Both 3-0; read about Darling at quarterback
enfeedia RSS feed publisherAnyone planning on taking in the SME football game Thursday, September 20th, before the reunion, might get much more than your average high school game. East is now 3-0 in the Sunflower League and is getting great press. Their quarterback, Jordan Darling, is a senior transfer from Midway, Texas, and at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds is one of the best high school quarterbacks in the country. He has a commitment to play for KU next year, and Charlie Weis has high praise for him. SME head coach Chip Sherman came in 2009 to turn the football program around. East had last won Sunflower League championships in 1961, 1964 and 1966.

Darling’s family knew Coach Sherman from Texas, and Jordan made his choice to play for Sherman his senior year. Coach Sherman has had some health problems, and it was important for Darling to play for him.

The Kansas City Star ran an article 9-14-2012 saying that not only did SME have Darling and a powerful offense, but their strongest area is their defense. The article featured their four linebackers. Their opponent on Thursday is Olathe South, the Kansas 6A champion last year. Olathe South’s quarterback is Frank Seurer, whose father played quarterback for KU and the Chiefs. Seurer passed for 1800 yards last year and has led Olathe South to a 3-0 season so far.

The game is getting a strong buildup, and it would be good to arrive at least by 6:30. We will try to all sit together, and there will be an announcement that the class of 62 is in attendance.
