Table saw blade/SawStop cartridge change process

Due to a recent table saw incident in which the SawStop brake cartridge was tripped, the woodshop Board has approved a number of changes to prevent the improper installation of table saw blades and SawStop brake cartridges. These changes will be reflected in updates
to the Monitor 's Handbook.

All new/replacement table saw blades and SawStop brake cartridges are stored in a locked equipment cabinet near the Monitor’s desk.

All new/replacement table saw blades and SawStop brake cartridges shall be installed with the supervision of the Monitor-on-duty (not just another shop member who is a Monitor) to ensure that both the blade and cartridge were installed and gapped correctly. This also applies to Dado blades and the wider dado SawStop brake cartridge.

If a shop member wishes to use their own table saw blade, the Monitor-on-duty must also be asked to verify that the blade and brake cartridge were installed and gapped correctly.

If the Monitor-on-duty does not feel comfortable supervising the blade and brake cartridge installation then the table saw cannot be used until another Monitor-on-duty can confirm the installation has been done correctly. Additional training to Monitors to perform the blade and brake cartridge installation will continue to be provided.

Blade/SawStop Brake Cartridge replacement responsibility if tripped

If the replacement of a table saw blade and cartridge is due to the brake cartridge being tripped, the shop user is responsible for the cost of replacing the damaged equipment or paying for the replacement costs.

If the brake cartridge trips immediately after being changed with the supervision of the Monitor-on-duty the shop will be responsible for the cost of replacing the saw blade and cartridge.

The current replacement costs are:
SawStop Standard Brake Cartridge TSBC-10R3 for 10" Blades is currently $100.
SawStop Dado Cartridge Dado sets TSDC-8R2 for 8" Blades is currently $110.
Table saw blades cost about $50 each.

Use caution when using the table saws. The brake cartridge will trip whenever the blade is turning, if:
The wood is too moist. Use the moisture meter to test your wood – especially if it is not kiln dried.

There is metal in the wood. Use the metal detector to search for nails, staples or metal foil on the back of plywood.

Any metal that comes in contact with a turning saw blade can trip the cartridge – tape measures, rulers
